Assignment - Project Development

1)What tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?

Electronic design,printing,coding and assembly making with digital fabrication is completed so LUX meter unit is ready

Testing is done

Remaining thing is callibaration with standard LUX meter


On 27Aug2015 I have finished calibarate my device with standard LUX meter available in market
The project is complete in all aspects.


2)What has worked? what hasn't?

What worked

My unit is showing indication depends upon light intensity.It giving reading between the range of 0 to 8000 lumense,

Not worked thing

There many things which did not worked as expected in the beginning. But I was able to find the error and overcome it.

My project is fairly accurate. Difference with standard lux meter is less than 5- 30 lumens

3)What questions need to be resolved?

High sensitivity light sensor:

Light sensor used by me is of ordinary quality. Therefore there is small difference compared to standard lux meter.
I am thinking to work on the cost difference and making higher sensitive light sensor in the kits for school children.

Reproduce few more units:

Now I am working on standarisation of design to make it reproducible in secondary school. Wanted to ensure that maximum hands on activity can be done by students.Want to test it in the school.

4)What will happen when?

Sept End :

To make available 10 D-I-Ykits and test it with seconday school children.

Oct End:

To publish manual in local language.

5)What have you learned?

I learned to take one idea from concept stage to final product stage.

a)I have learned to do electronic design, production and programming

b)I improve my skills in using Modella , PCB making and also soldering for SMD components.

c) I was having limited electronic background. This project gave me opportunity to use DATA Sheet. I learnt to read it. I got knowledge about pin connection then write code and programming.

d)I also used 3D printer for the first time. I have designed and cut my casing for this project on laser machine

e) Calibration of instruments taught me about sensors, finishing of the products etc.

6)Documentation during development

Documentation in simple way and make kit to manufacture at school.

I have noted every steps while carrying out my project. This helped me to cross checked my mistakes and steps.
This helped in fault finding. This helped in further progress of the project..

I have done following Documentation while executing the project.

1) Designing of part :
I have made design of circuit, casing for PCB, display and sensors etc.

2) Step by step by documents :
I have written step by step procedure so that student can easily follow them and able to make their own lux meter.

3) Working model Video :
This is to show and demonstrate the final product.

4) Digital Fabrication process :
All design files are shared and available for printing.

5) Code :
Code is very easy to follow and can be explained to secondary students very easily.

7)Demand- vs supply-side time management

Now my first product is ready and tested. I am planning to supply kit of LUX meter to schools

There are 100+ schools in VA network. They produces LED light units. This LUX meter will teach following skills to them

1) Soldering

2) About light

3) Designing and Laser machine use

I am targeting at very low cost to make it easy available
This project completed with first sucessfuly trials,whatever things I found i'll check and fixed permanently
I am planning to procure higher sensitive sensors and make it available in kit. I am planning to make 10 such kit in next2 months and after testing , I will go for making atleast one project in network schools of lux meter.

8)Spiral development

Development is continuous project. Many new ideas and possibilities stucked to me
while doing the project. As things moves, plan to work on those ideas as well.

Following are some of the ideas , I wish to incorporate in future.

1)I want to make it chargeable on grid/ solar

2)I want to modify design to make use of multiple source of power.

3)I want to addother feature like torch/ FM radio

4)I want to connect it to mobile

5) Want to integrate lux meter and light bulb together. I also want to specify lighting in houses depending on light quality.
